3. Lesson section
While the obligatory parts of wudu must be completed for validity, there are many Sunnah (recommended) acts that the Prophet ﷺ practiced. Performing these adds beauty to your wudu and increases your reward!
What Makes an Act Sunnah?
Sunnah acts are those the Prophet ﷺ regularly practiced. They are not obligatory - your wudu is still valid without them - but performing them follows the Prophet's example and earns extra blessings.

Practice points
- Saying Bismillah: Begin wudu by saying 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah)
- Using Miswak/Siwak: Clean teeth before or during wudu with miswak
- Washing Hands First: Wash hands three times before starting the main wudu
- Rinsing Mouth: Rinse the mouth thoroughly three times
- Cleaning the Nose: Sniff water into nose and blow it out three times
- Running Fingers Through Beard: For those with beards, run wet fingers through it
- Washing Between Fingers/Toes: Interlace fingers and wash between toes
- Wiping Ears: Wipe inside and outside of ears with wet fingers
- Starting with the Right: Always wash the right limb before the left
- Washing Three Times: Wash each part three times (minimum is once)
5. Hadith
"If it were not that I would cause hardship to my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the miswak with every wudu."
Source: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari & Muslim)
6. Tip
Pro Tip: You don't need to add all sunnah acts at once. Start by mastering the obligatory parts, then gradually add sunnah practices as they become natural. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if small."
Key takeaways
- Sunnah acts are recommended but not required for validity
- Following the sunnah increases reward and blessings
- The miswak (tooth stick) is highly recommended
- Washing three times is sunnah; once is the minimum
