The word 'wudu' comes from the Arabic root meaning 'beauty' and 'brightness'. When you perform wudu, you're not just washing - you're preparing yourself to stand before Allah, the Creator of the universe.

"يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ"

"O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles."

Why Wudu is Required

Wudu is a prerequisite for:

• Salah (Prayer) - The five daily prayers
• Tawaf - Circling the Kaaba during Hajj or Umrah
• Touching the Quran - Handling the physical mushaf

Without wudu, these acts of worship are not valid. This shows how important spiritual purity is in Islam.

"When a Muslim servant (of Allah) washes his face (in the course of wudu), every sin which he has looked at with his eyes will be washed away from his face with water... when he washes his hands, every sin which has been committed by his hands will be effaced... when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away..."
