Question 1

Islam promotes violence and terrorism

Accepted Answer

The name "Islam" comes from the root s-l-m, meaning peace and submission to God. The Quran unequivocally forbids terrorism, vigilantism, and harming innocent civilians. Mainstream Islamic scholars across the world have unanimously condemned terrorist acts as completely antithetical to Islamic law. The Quran states: "Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely." (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32)

Question 2

Jihad literally means "holy war" against all non-believers

Accepted Answer

The Arabic word "Jihad" literally means "striving" or "exerting effort" in the path of righteousness. The term "holy war" (bellum sacrum) is a European medieval Crusader concept with no linguistic equivalent in Arabic. The primary Jihad in Islam is the internal spiritual struggle to purify one's soul, resist temptations, and do good. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The true fighter in the way of God is the one who strives against their own self for the sake of Allah." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1621 - Sahih)

Question 3

Muslims are commanded to hate and fight all non-Muslims

Accepted Answer

Islam commands Muslims to treat all non-hostile people of other faiths with supreme kindness (Birr), righteousness, and fairness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had Jewish and Christian neighbors whom he visited when sick, traded with, and signed mutual defense pacts with. The Quran commands: "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." (Surah Al-Mumtahanah 60:8)

Question 4

Islam was spread across the world by the sword and force

Accepted Answer

Historical consensus among both Muslim and Western historians confirms that religious conversions to Islam were overwhelming gradual, organic, and voluntary. The world's largest Muslim country today, Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central Asia, embraced Islam entirely through peaceful trade, ethical merchants, and scholarly dialogue. The Quran explicitly mandates: "There shall be no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256)

Question 5

Islam oppresses women and considers them inferior to men

Accepted Answer

Islam established the spiritual, moral, and human equality of men and women 1,400 years ago. Long before Western legal systems recognized women's legal personhood, Islam gave women the right to own independent property, manage businesses, inherit, choose their husband, divorce, keep their maiden name, and receive dedicated financial maintenance. The Quran declares: "Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while being a believer - We will surely cause them to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward according to the best of what they used to do." (Surah An-Nahl 16:97)

Question 6

The hijab is an oppressive garment forced upon Muslim women

Accepted Answer

For millions of Muslim women worldwide, the hijab is an act of spiritual worship, personal autonomy, and dignity. It rejects commercial hyper-sexualization and consumerist beauty standards, demanding that a woman be judged for her intellect, character, and faith rather than her physical appearance. Forced hijab violates Islamic principles of free devotion. The Quran addresses modesty with dignity: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused." (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:59)

Question 7

Islam permits men to physically beat or abuse their wives (Quran 4:34)

Accepted Answer

Islam strictly prohibits domestic violence, physical assault, and emotional abuse. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never struck any woman, child, or servant in his entire life, explicitly saying: 'Do not strike the female servants of Allah' and 'How can one of you strike his wife like a beast, and then embrace her?' Scholars explain the word in 4:34 as a strictly non-violent, symbolic final step with a siwak (toothstick) to de-escalate marital breakdown. Aisha (ra) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never struck anything with his hand—neither a woman nor a servant—except when fighting in the path of Allah." (Sahih Muslim 2328)

Question 8

Muslim women are forbidden from seeking education, working, or holding leadership roles

Accepted Answer

Education in Islam is a mandatory obligation for both men and women. Islamic history is rich with prominent female scholars, jurists, business leaders, doctors, and philanthropists. Fatima al-Fihri founded the world's oldest university in 859 CE, and Aisha (the Prophet's wife) was one of the foremost jurists and teachers of early Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ declared: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim (male and female)." (Sunan Ibn Majah 224 - Sahih)

Question 9

Islam introduced and encourages unrestricted polygyny to degrade women

Accepted Answer

Polygyny was universally practiced without limits in ancient civilizations (Rome, Persia, China, biblical Judea, pre-Islamic Arabia). Islam was the first religious system in history to legally restrict it to a maximum of four, make strict justice and equal maintenance a mandatory condition, and recommend monogamy as the safer norm. The Quran states: "...marry those that please you of other women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one..." (Surah An-Nisa 4:3)

Question 10

Muslims worship a different, pagan God named 'Allah' or a moon god

Accepted Answer

"Allah" is simply the unique Arabic word for "The One True God" who created the universe—the exact same God worshipped by Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Arab Christians and Arab Jews have used the word "Allah" in their Bibles and prayers for centuries prior to and following Islam. The Quran tells Muslims: "And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best... and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:46)

Question 11

Muslims worship the Kaaba, the Black Stone, or Prophet Muhammad

Accepted Answer

Muslims worship God alone (Tawhid). The Kaaba is not an object of worship; it serves solely as a focal direction (Qiblah) for global unity in prayer. Muslims pray towards it, not to it. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is revered as a human messenger and servant of God, never divinized. Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab said to the Black Stone: "I know that you are only a stone that can neither harm nor benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kiss you, I would never have kissed you." (Sahih Bukhari 1597)

Question 12

Muslims do not believe in or respect Jesus and Mary

Accepted Answer

Belief in Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him) is a mandatory pillar of Islamic faith; no person can be a Muslim without loving and revering him as one of God's greatest messengers. Muslims believe in his miraculous virgin birth, his miracles (healing the blind and lepers, raising the dead by God's leave), and his return before the Day of Judgment. The Quran states: "The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him." (Surah An-Nisa 4:171)

Question 13

The Quran has been altered, edited, or lost original texts over time

Accepted Answer

The Quran is historically the most meticulously preserved text of antiquity. It was preserved through dual parallel mechanisms: mass oral memorization letter-for-letter by millions of people across centuries, and written manuscripts dating back to the first century of Islam (like the Birmingham Quran manuscript, dated 568-645 CE) which match today's text character-for-character. Allah declared in the Quran: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian." (Surah Al-Hijr 15:9)

Question 14

Muhammad ﷺ wrote the Quran himself or copied stories from the Bible

Accepted Answer

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was unlettered (Ummi), unable to read or write in any language. The Arabic translation of the Old and New Testaments did not exist until centuries after his death. Furthermore, the Quran frequently corrects biblical accounts (such as naming the ruler in Joseph's time 'King' and in Moses's time 'Pharaoh', a subtle historical distinction only proven by modern 19th-century hieroglyphic decipherment). The Quran issued an open challenge: "And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:23)

Question 15

Islam is dogmatic and fundamentally opposed to science and reasoning

Accepted Answer

The Quran contains over 750 verses commanding humanity to investigate the cosmos, biology, and natural laws through empirical observation. This scriptural mandate fueled the Islamic Golden Age (8th–14th century), where Muslim scholars founded the scientific method (Ibn al-Haytham), invented algebra (Al-Khwarizmi), pioneered optics, revolutionized medicine (Ibn Sina), and preserved world knowledge. The Quran asks: "Say: Travel through the earth and observe how He began creation." (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:20) and "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" (Surah Az-Zumar 39:9)

Question 16

Islam demands blind faith and rejects inquiry about human origins and universe

Accepted Answer

Islam explicitly condemns blind following of ancestral dogmas (Quran 2:170). The Quran invites scrutiny and rational conviction. Medieval Muslim naturalists like Al-Jahiz (9th century) and Ibn Miskawayh wrote extensively on the adaptation of living organisms to environments centuries before modern biology. The Quran commands: "Bring your proof, if you should be truthful." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:111)

Question 17

Islam executes anyone who chooses to leave the religion (Apostasy)

Accepted Answer

The Quran repeatedly and explicitly guarantees freedom of belief ('There is no compulsion in religion' 2:256, 'Whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills let him disbelieve' 18:29) and never prescribes a worldly physical penalty for personal, peaceful changes of faith. Classical capital penalties discussed in jurisprudence applied strictly to high treason, rebellion, and military subversion against the community during wartime. The Quran states: "Indeed, those who believed then disbelieved, then believed, then disbelieved, and then increased in disbelief - never will Allah forgive them, nor guide them..." (Surah An-Nisa 4:137) — Mentioning repeated apostasy without prescribing any worldly execution.

Question 18

Jizya was an extortion tax that made non-Muslims second-class citizens

Accepted Answer

The Jizya was a modest civic tax paid only by able-bodied, fighting-age non-Muslim men in exchange for state protection and exemption from mandatory military service. Women, children, the poor, monks, and the elderly were completely exempt. Muslims, meanwhile, paid the mandatory Zakat (often a higher tax rate) and were obligated to fight and risk their lives in military defense. When the Muslim general Khalid ibn al-Walid was unable to protect the Christian citizens of Hims against the Byzantine army, he ordered the entire collected Jizya to be refunded to the Christians, stating: "We took your wealth only to protect you, and since we cannot protect you, your wealth is returned to you."

Question 19

Islam originated slavery and endorsed the chattel human trade

Accepted Answer

Slavery was a universal, brutal global institution in every ancient society (Greece, Rome, Persia, India, America). Islam systematically dismantled it: it outlawed kidnapping and enslaving free people, made freeing slaves one of the highest acts of worship, and established revolutionary legal protections for bondspersons, granting them equal food, clothing, and legal personhood. The Prophet ﷺ said: "They are your brothers whom Allah has put under your hands. Whoever has his brother under his hand should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and do not burden them with what overcomes them." (Sahih Bukhari 30)

Question 20

Sharia law is a barbaric, static code obsessed with harsh amputations and executions

Accepted Answer

Sharia literally means 'the pathway to water and life'. Over 90% of Sharia deals with personal prayer, ethical commerce, charity, diet, and family care. Criminal punishments (Hudud) make up a tiny fraction and are bound by near-impossible evidentiary criteria (requiring multiple unimpeachable eyewitnesses) and the foundational legal maxim: 'Ward off penal punishments through the slightest doubt.' The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established the universal legal maxim: "Ward off punishments from the Muslims as much as you can. If there is any way out for the accused, let them go, for it is better for the leader to err in forgiveness than to err in punishment." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1424)

Question 21

The marriage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Aisha (ra) was unethical

Accepted Answer

Throughout global human history prior to the 20th century, marriages across Europe, Rome, Asia, and Arabia were universally contracted at biological puberty and social maturity due to short life expectancies and different societal norms. Neither the bitterest pagan enemies of the Prophet nor early Christian critics in Arabia ever criticized this marriage, because it conformed fully to the universal moral and cultural norms of the 7th century. Aisha (ra) herself was already betrothed to Jubayr ibn Mut'im prior to the Prophet ﷺ, proving that young women of her age were universally sought for marriage in pre-Islamic Arabian society.

Question 22

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a ruthless military warlord seeking conquest

Accepted Answer

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ endured 13 years of severe persecution, torture of his followers, boycott, and exile in Mecca without ever raising a sword. When he finally liberated Mecca at the head of a 10,000-strong army, he declared a general amnesty to all who had tortured his family and companions, saying: 'Go, for you are free.' Across all his defensive battles, total casualties on all sides were fewer than 1,000 people. The Quran describes the Prophet's universal purpose: "And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107)

Question 23

Islamic Halal slaughter (Dhabihah) is cruel and painful to animals

Accepted Answer

Islamic slaughter is designed to ensure the quickest, least painful demise. Using an intensely sharp blade, the carotid arteries, jugular veins, and windpipe are severed in a single swift cut. Blood pressure to the brain drops to zero within seconds, causing instant loss of consciousness before pain signals can reach the cerebral cortex. Islam strictly forbids sharpening blades in front of animals or stressing them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ commanded: "Verily Allah has prescribed excellence (Ihsan) in all things. So when you slaughter, slaughter with excellence. Let each of you sharpen his blade and give ease to his animal." (Sahih Muslim 1955)

Question 24

Fasting in Ramadan is dangerous starvation and unhealthy

Accepted Answer

Islamic fasting (Sawm) is intermittent fasting from dawn to sunset, proven by modern medical science to provide immense metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological benefits, including cellular repair (autophagy). Anyone who is sick, traveling, pregnant, nursing, elderly, or diabetic is explicitly exempted by Islamic law. The Quran states: "...And whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Question 25

Islam teaches that all non-Muslims automatically burn in Hell forever regardless of circumstances

Accepted Answer

God is 'Ar-Rahman' (The Most Merciful) and 'Al-Adl' (The Utterly Just). Islamic theology (articulated by classical authorities like Al-Ghazali and Ibn Taymiyyah) clarifies that individuals who never received the authentic, undistorted message of Islam, or who died in ignorance through no fault of their own, are not punished and are judged with perfect mercy and individual justice by God. The Quran explicitly declares: "And We never punish until We have sent a messenger." (Surah Al-Isra 17:15)

Question 26

Islamic inheritance laws unfairly give women half of what men receive in all cases

Accepted Answer

The claim that women receive half of men's inheritance applies in only 4 specific familial scenarios. In over 30 other inheritance cases in Islamic jurisprudence, a woman inherits equal to or more than a man, or inherits while a similarly situated man receives nothing. Where a brother receives more than a sister, it is because he bears 100% mandatory financial duty for his mother, sisters, wife, and children, while the woman's inheritance is 100% her private property. The Quran establishes equal inheritance for parents: "And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of what he left if he has a child..." (Surah An-Nisa 4:11) — Mother and father inherit identical shares.

Question 27

The Quran commands unconditional killing of disbelievers (e.g. "Kill them wherever you find them")

Accepted Answer

Verses like 2:191 and 9:5 are among the most misrepresented texts when stripped of their immediate historical and textual context. These verses were revealed regarding specific hostile pagan tribes of Mecca who had repeatedly violated peace treaties, massacred peaceful allies, and initiated warfare to annihilate the early Muslim community. The immediate preceding and succeeding verses mandate fighting only active aggressors and granting asylum to any enemy seeking peace. The Quran instructs right after: "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety." (Surah At-Tawbah 9:6)

Question 28

Islam permits forced marriage and honor killings

Accepted Answer

In Islamic law, a woman's explicit, free consent is an absolute legal prerequisite for marriage; any forced marriage is legally null and void. 'Honor killings' are cultural and tribal abominations with zero basis in Islam; Islamic jurisprudence strictly classifies them as premeditated murder, punishable by capital punishment. Khansa bint Khidam reported that her father married her off against her will when she was a matron. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he immediately declared the marriage invalid. (Sahih Bukhari 5138)

Question 29

The God of Islam is harsh, distant, and unloving, demanding only fearful subservience

Accepted Answer

Divine Love and Infinite Mercy are central to the Islamic understanding of God. Out of the 114 chapters of the Quran, 113 begin with the invocation: 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.' God's names include 'Al-Wadud' (The Loving), 'Ar-Rahman' (The Infinitely Compassionate), and 'Al-Ghaffar' (The Perpetual Forgiver). The Prophet ﷺ taught: "Allah is more merciful to His servants than a loving mother is to her infant child." (Sahih Bukhari 5999)

Question 30

Islam teaches fatalism: everything is preordained, so human free will and efforts are meaningless

Accepted Answer

Islam affirms both God's infinite, eternal foreknowledge (Qadar) and genuine human free will, moral agency, and personal responsibility. Humans make real choices for which they are held morally accountable. Preordination means God knows outside the bounds of time what we will freely choose, not that He coerces our will. A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Should I tie my camel and rely upon Allah, or leave her untied and rely upon Allah?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Tie her, and rely upon Allah." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2517)
